Product Description

Hydroxyzine HCL: 10mg /25mg Tablet &10mg Syrup

Hydroxyzine is a first-generation antihistamine of the diphenylmethane and piperazine classes. It was first synthesized by UnionChimiqueBelge in 1956 and was marketed by Pfizer in the United States later the same year, and is still in widespread use today. Eventhough it is an effective sedative, hypnotic, analgesic, and tranquilizer, it shares almost none of the abuse, dependence, addiction, and toxicity potential of other drugs used for the same range of therapeutic reasons

Mechanism of action:

Hydroxyzine competes with histamine for H1-receptor sites on the effector cell surface. Blockade of H1-receptors also suppressesthe formation of edema, flare, and pruritus that result from histaminic activity. The sedative properties of hydroxyzine occur at thesubcortical level of the CNS, and, this effect may be dose-related. Hydroxyzine has some antiemetic actions secondary to its centralanticholinergic actions. Hydroxyzine also demonstrates antiarrhythmic, analgesic, local anesthetic, and skeletal muscle relaxantproperties as well as bronchodilatory and mild antisecretory effects. Although anti-histamines possess intrinsic analgesic properties(perhaps secondary to interfering with nociception), They should not be considered potent analgesics.

The molecular weight (about 448) is low enough that excretion into breast milk should beexpected. The effects, if any, on the nursing infant are unknown. So it is not recommended in nursing mothers.
